Last Friday, a massive ransomware attack was launched using the WannaCry virus. The attack infected more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries.

Once infected, all of the data on the computer’s hard drive was encrypted and a ransom had to be paid in order to unencrypt it.

The virus depended on the following vulnerabilities:

  1. Running end-of-life versions of Windows (like XP)
  2. Not having current versions of Windows patched
  3. Not running an up-to-date, real-time antivirus agent on all PCs and servers

The last line of defense is to ensure you have regular, complete backups of your data. This allows for restoring the data rather than paying the ransom.

The attack last Friday was the largest ever and experts believe this is just the beginning of larger and more frequent attacks.
